Girls Coding Club

The ladies of the Girls Coding Club accomplished a lot during the club sessions including:
  • exploring coding through the context of fashion and design using the CS First curriculum and Scratch
  • e-textile project: sewing an LED bookmark
The e-textile project was inspired by the book Sew Electric. Materials for the project can be bought from craft stores and from SparkFun.

For this project, students first learned about electric circuits so that they understood how the parts of their project needed to be arranged in order to work together.

Then they designed their bookmark, cut out the felt pieces, and started hand-stitching with the conductive thread. They learned to tie knots and make a running stitch. By the end, they inserted the battery and -- Ta Da! The LED light lit up!

The CS First website is down today. Instead, we're going explore coding through some of these projects and check out how some women are using code in their careers.
